Authentic tea ceremony house restored into a private ryokan. Situated in upper central side of Kyoto city, a nice part of town outside the busy area. 1 minute walk from Daitokuji, a center of tea ceremony in Japan. Stay in a finely aged traditional Japanese building. Explore the local cafes and restaurants where locals eat and enjoy their lives. Visit craftsman of the area and deepen your knowledge of our unique culture and tradition. On its first floor, there are tatami mats living room with wood dining table with 5 chairs, kitchen with a good selection of cooking utensils, modern Japanese toilet and round tile bath tub with Japanese cypress wall. On the second floor features traditional tatami mat bedroom (sleeping on futon) which can be separated into 2 rooms with Fusuma( sliding paper doors).
We are living just around the corner. We are always ready to help you for the information, preparation, reservation, suggestion, and advice about anything. We love Kyoto and we'd love to share tips and hidden gems with you. We often go out for a sightseeing around Kyoto to find the seasonal beauty, festival, antique market and special opening of temples and our guests are welcome to join us! We are travel lovers, went over 40 countries around the world and settled in Kyoto, this cultural and historical center of Japan. While we were traveling, we always try to talk with locals, eat and enjoy like we live there. We hope our house would provide you the experience like we enjoyed in the other countries, "living like a local". Both of us loves trekking, cycling, yoga, reading and drawing. Also we are very into tea ceremony. Shimo is good at Japanese history & cooking (especially sushi!) and Rika loves textile and antiques( ask her favorite shops!) It would be nice if we could go for trekking or cycling together, or make Japanese dishes together. We look forward to hosting you and share the seasonal beauty of Kyoto with you.
The Keyword of the area. "ZEN", "THE WAY OF TEA", "ART & CRAFT”, “LOCAL”. Karigane is located 1 minute-walk from Daitoku-ji, the best places in Japan to see a wide variety of zen gardens and experience the combination of “ZEN" culture and “THE WAY OF TEA”. We offer morning meditation experience at Daitokuji and 3 kinds of tea ceremony experiences, by tea artist, by tea farmer, and in Chinese. Karigane is located Kyoto’s famed weaving district, Nishijin, is now being the town gathers craftsman. Visiting the weaving factory of Kimono belts, Indigo dyer, craftsman of Kintsugi and hair ornaments will be special memory for those who loves "ART & CRAFTS". There are wide variety of “LOCAL” restaurants. such as Sushi, Kaiseki, Shojin Ryori, Soba, Udon, Izakaya, Wagyu BBQ, Deep fried skewer, Okonomiyaki, and Ramen all within walking distance. 2 super markets nearby for those who would like to cook at home. 7 WORLD HERITAGE SITES are within 6km. Golden pavilion(1.8km), Silver pavilion(5.6km), Kamigamo shrine(2km), Shimogamo shrine(2.9km),Nijo castle(3.8km), Ryoanji(3.2km) and Ninnaji(4.4km) and they are easily accessible with our free rental bicycle or public bus.
