Originally from Holland, Marie has lived in Kwale, Kenya since 2007 and knows the area very well. Marie manages an educational health project in Kwale which hosts many international visitors. Marie decided to create a beautiful clifftop villa for others to experience this area. Marie has two daughters, and continues to travel widely herself, to Europe and other parts of Africa.

The Cliff House is in the area known as the Shimba Hills, a 400 metre high range of hills set just 25kms inland from Diani Beach (many times voted "best beach in Africa"). In the Shimba Hills there are two National Parks (Game parks) - Shimba Hills National Park and Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. It is a forested area which on one side overlooks the coast beaches and on the other overlooks the game parks.
