A romantic origin of the name 'Galle' is attributed to the Portuguese mariner who first sighted its natural harbour. Tradition has it that a look-out sailor on the crow's-nest of the Portuguese vessel espied a cock crowing on a rock on the promontory now known as Rumassala. The man shrilled in fascination, "Galla - buonovista", a cock - beautiful sight!
The Fort of Galle covers an area of 38 hectares, with 326 houses and many public buildings within the impressive ramparts. There is a population of around 2,500 residents, of whom half are Muslim, a little less than half Buddhist, and a tiny proportion of Burghers and non SL nationals.
Galle Fort is the largest Dutch colonial living Fort in Asia. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site. The architecture is predominately Dutch origin & nowadays there are many shops, restaurants, & bars. Walking on top if the Ramparts early morning or late afternoon is a 'must do' & lecture tours on the history of the Fort are available to book.
