Sailing under the flag of The Knights of St. John, they were allowed to legally attack Turkish ships, plundering them in the time of war. They were also instrumental to help the Knights of Malta to win over the Ottoman Empire’s best fleet headed by the well known Dragut when they tried to invade Malta in 1565 in what is remembered as the Great Siege of Malta.
