Before receiving its present name, Santa Clara was known in Maya as Tiyaxcah, which means “first village”. Since pre-Columbian times, the Maya used the area for salt production, an activity that still persists and whose salt pans can be seen along the road. According to tradition, at the beginning of the 17th century the inhabitants of Tiyaxcah found a sculpture of Santa Clara, approximately 1.5 meters high and weighing 120 kilos, in the sea. It is said that the image was sent from Spain to a parish in Cuba, but the boat was shipwrecked before it arrived. Somehow, the effigy ended up on the Yucatecan coast. The fishermen of the town, witnessing the miracle, carried the sculpture on their shoulders along the 14 kilometers that separate the port from Dzidzantún, where it was permanently safeguarded. In her honor, the port was renamed Santa Clara. Every July 22nd, the villagers take the image back to the port and carry it in their boats to ask for protection and good fishing. The sculpture remains there for a week and on August 2 it returns to Dzidzantún, its usual home. Today, this impressive figure with more than 400 years of history can be admired in the church of Dzidzantún.
