Nestled in Glenwood's secluded native bush, Kanuka Hut is the retreat you need to relax and reset. Sitting on the deck or in the hot tub you will be surrounded by birdsong, with an amazing view of the Harbour landscape and surrounding bush. This solar-powered, off-grid hut will surprise you with its comfort. We practice a sustainable ethos and where possible we reduce, reuse and recycle.
PLEASE NOTE - There are two options to access your hut:
DRIVE IN via the farm track with your 4WD SUV suitable for off-road driving.
WALK IN/HOST SHUTTLE: park at the designated car park near the homestead. Take the moderate 5-minute walk to Kanuka Hut with your bags, via the signposted track, OR request our free shuttle service to the hut. Ken will meet you on arrival and take you and your luggage to Kanuka Hut. For your independence, we are happy for you to use our 4WD to access the hut during your stay if required.
Adjoined by a generous covered deck to your combined kitchenette, lounge, and bedroom unit is your private bathroom, complete with a gas heated shower, and composting toilet. Our Green Loo reduces water consumption, and the waste is turned into compost and put back on the land, returning to nature what we borrowed from it.
Cooking is done outside on the BBQ & two-ring gas hob. The kitchenette is fully equipped and has a toaster, an electric jug, and a mini fridge. Natural mineral well water fresh from the tap is safe to drink, with no chlorine added.
What power we generate from the sun throughout the day will need to last through the night, immerse yourself in off-grid living. There is a wall heater for cooler nights.
All our walkways are private and for paying guests only while staying at Glenwood. We recommend taking the time to explore and provide a map of the walkways and property in your hut.
Take a look at our Totara Hut listing, if off-grid is not your style.
We purchased Glenwood late in 2015 as a retirement project with the intention of restoring the old homestead, whare, and school building to retain the property's rich history. Passionate about protecting and regenerating the surrounding native bush we placed a large portion of Glenwood under QEII Trust Covenant in 2018 – a lifetime covenant is our way of protecting this beautiful land. We live on-site with our much-loved Labrador dogs. Kanuka Hut joins Totara Hut in welcoming guests from 2022.
Our proximity to the Hinewai Reserve and Purple Peak Curry Tracks is to be appreciated. Akaroa township is a 10-minute drive back down Grehan Valley and you can enjoy the many cafes, eateries, and boutique shops it has to offer. Enjoy the local weekend farmers markets or book a trip out on the Harbour to see the Hectors Dolphins.
