Mahaanui Cottage is a fully furnished, self-contained, private, country cottage located in the beautiful Tiniroto, between Gisborne ( 1.5 hrs since cyclone as our bridge was destroyed) and Wairoa (approx. 50 minutes). With everything you need for an enjoyable stay, the cottage is perfect for friends and families looking for a relaxing country break. Or active farm experience.
With 3 spacious bedrooms, it comfortably sleeps up to 8 people. And if needed, a double sofa-bed and extra single bed can be added in one of the lounges – to sleep an extra 3 people. Plus plenty of room for tents as well in the cottage garden!
The kitchen is well equipped and has basic food provisions such as flour, sugar, cooking oil, spices, tea and coffee but you will have to bring all your other food with you.
We encourage you to go walking over the 614 hectares of farmland during your stay, or venture over to the scenic Hangaroa River or Doneraille Park – both only minutes away.
So whether it be to walk, swim, kayak, fish, picnic, cycle or just relax with a book! We invite you to take some time to join us and enjoy the picturesque scenery, explore the farm and experience our country way of life.
Located in the beautiful Tiniroto, Mahaanui Station is a 614 hectare working sheep and beef farm.
Simon's father Peter bought Mahaanui (Maori word for lots of joy/happiness) in the late 1950's and cleared the land of scrubby trees to develop pasture for sheep and cattle to graze on. Simon has worked the farm since he was 25 and loves to share his farming knowledge and lifestyle with guests. Sally works at the local Gisborne hospital as a nurse and helps Simon when needed on the farm. While their 3 children (all currently travelling overseas), have all followed in similar footsteps - working on farms around the world and studying agricultural sciences at university.
Perhaps the best thing about Mahaanui is it’s not Rotorua or Queenstown.
Instead what Simon and Sally offer guests is a peaceful and relaxing farm experience - full of breathtaking hill country with marked walking trails, private access to the gorgeous Hangaroa River and the opportunity to experience farming activities if they wish. Bring your hiking shoes, mountain bike or horse for a more active break. They truly love sharing their piece of paradise with guests and introducing them to their farming lifestyle.
Perhaps the most exciting thing on offer at Mahaanui Farmstay are Simon and Sally’s guided farm tours (on foot or in a farm vehicle) and shearing/mustering demonstrations. These interactive activities are perfect for groups of all ages, and make for a fun and educational experience!
For those interested, group recommendations and pricing can be arranged with Sally either prior to or upon guest arrival. However please note that all farm tours and demonstrations are subject to Simon’s availability, and unfortunately cannot always be guaranteed.
There are also marked walking tracks for guests to enjoy during their stay – one along the Hangaroa River & one that ventures off through the paddocks and out towards the back of the farm. Equally as beautiful there are also a number of unmarked tracks worth exploring.
With gorgeous river and hill-side views in every direction, the photo opportunities are endless!
Some other nearby landmarks to check out include the Hackfalls Arboretum, Rere Rockslide and Ruakituri Valley – well known for its excellent trout fishing. And for those keen on exploring a little further, Mahia and Lake Waikaremoana are only an 1.5 hour drive away.
