Situated in a privileged location overlooking the Douro, the picturesque village of Mazouco with its traditional houses is worth a visit for its important archaeological, historical, architectural and natural heritage. The Mazouco rock carvings, located next to the Douro River and set in a magnificent landscape, are one of the most important remains of Upper Palaeolithic art in Portugal and were the first example of open-air Palaeolithic rock art to be identified in Europe. The engravings, consisting of four on a schist wall, with only one of the figures being complete, were made known to the scientific world in 1981. The clearest one is that of a horse, and became known as the “Little Horse of Mazouco”. Measuring 62 cm long, it is one of the most beautiful images of open-air rock art in the world.
