Lajos Vermes, born in Subotica in 1860, was a sports enthusiast, cyclist, and a pioneer of sports photography in Hungary. He built a sports circuit in Palić, along with a hotel and electrification projects, including a tram line. From 1880 to 1914, he organized international sports competitions in the spirit of the Olympics, which were forerunners of the modern Olympic Games.
