You can walk to the shops in about 25-30 minutes if you need to. A car makes things easier with groceries, wine store etc but you can definitely get a train and then uber to our house and just walk places If you're wanting to explore the North Fork Hamptons etc though you'll need a car

Amazing beach town area. 30 minutes to the Hamptons and the North Fork. 60 minute drive from JFK airport, 90 minutes from NYC city. Everything is nearby. You can walk 30 minutes to the shops (or a 4 minute drive) and of course you are about 20 steps to your private beach. A car is handy in this area, but not necessary. 10-13 minute uber from the train station that takes you to NYC. (90-120 minute travel time) Down the road is an amazing cafe with excellent smoothies and coffee. You'll also find the best seafood shop in town! There's a candy store, a bagel store, a great wine bar, supermarket...there's even a Walmart a 10 minute drive away if you need it.
