Please note that Puntas de Leon is a 540 hectare (1300 acres) working farm which is in the middle of very beautiful countryside (Sierra Carape) and the right place to get away from it all, but it is not luxury accommodation. It is 3 hrs from Montevideo, and 15km from Aigua und the track to the property is slow going for normal cars. Drive very carefully if you dont have a pickup. There are 4 gates to be opened, please close them if you find them closed.
The site is off-grid, but solar power and batteries provide electricity, Wi-Fi, and a refrigerator. There are gas pumps for cooking and hot water. You may need to change one at some point.
There are some basic dry goods and water on-site; please replenish any water you use. Please keep in mind that the rivers are clean, but animals have access to them – so boil the water before using it for anything like cooking and drinking. Fresh water comes from another small stream; it may dry up in case of drought. Bring drinking water just in case.
The "swimming pool" and "beach" are actually a rock pool with nice slabs of rock and a natural part of the Arroyo Leon. It can be up to 2m deep even in summer, with strong rains it can get deeper and faster. While I have never seen one, animals and fish might be in the pool. It is therefore forbidden for children and non swimmers. You use it at your own risk and please never go alone, in case you slip on the rocks and injure yourself.
The place is not suitable for children. There is no television.
There isn't much to do in Punta de Leon except hiking, riding, exploring the countryside read and commune with nature. This is a place for deceleration, reading and relaxing, or writing that book you always wanted to write.
The walls are very thick, and there is a large fire place in the living, but the house is otherwise unheated! of t so it might not be the place for you in winter?
There is a washing machine but it has not yet been connected, Smoking on the patio outside only please
Maria is from Aigua, she will prepare the house for you. She can clean once a week if you request it and are staying for two weeks or more. Until the end of Oct there may be dogs, chickens and a goat in the neighboring farm house. Of course, there may always be cows, sheep and horse on the farm.
You can take your dogs and take them with you in the property, but remember there are snakes in Uruguay. Also take care with the farm's dogs. The 2 that usually roam free are very nice and friendly, but they are working farm animals, there is job is to protect the animals against intruders
The beaches of La Paloma or Punta del Este are about 1 hr away. The closest towns are Aigua 20, Rocha 45 and Minas 60 mins away. Aigua is closest for shopping. It is a nice town with festivals and two nice restaurants.
