Jonkmanshof is a beautifully-restored 1854 Cape Dutch heritage house, recently featured by Condé Nast Traveller as the coolest farmhouse to rent in South Africa. Nestled in the small, picturesque Klein Karoo town of Montagu, it's the perfect luxurious escape. The house is also featured in the Elle Decoration, France in April/May 2019 edition.
The historic interior features contemporary South African art mixed with 18th century Cape furniture. The entrance hall features a collection of old turtle shells, gleaming wooden floors and shutters to keep the interior cool. The library has midnight-blue walls off-set by art and antiques, curated ceramics and a wonderful collection of books.
The lounge is painted oxblood red and furnished with comfortable sofas, antique chairs, a wall-mounted Cape-Dutch cupboard and an antique green marble fireplace. Firewood is provided in winter.
The farmhouse-style kitchen has a beautiful herringbone brick floor, marble-and-wrought-iron work surfaces, a Smeg cooker and a pizza oven built into the wall. A glass conservatory, filled with indigenous succulents, links the kitchen and dining area with the walled vegetable and potted citrus gardens.
We travelled through Montagu years ago and loved the town surrounded by these majestic mountains and decided to look for a weekend getaway. This property came to us by chance and we were so honoured to be able to purchase a heritage property and restore it to its former glory.
Its a house that loves people and food being prepared, music and laughter and we have decided to open it as a guesthouse and hope that you will experience the same charm , silence and heritage that this house offers.
This house is also available as an exclusive rental and please contact me for rates.
