The Euphrasian Basilica
Once Christianity was established in Istria, it required a focal point of worship. In the sixth century, the Bishop of Poreč commissioned this episcopal complex, which today is considered the finest example of Byzantine art and architecture in the Mediterranean region. The church’s apse is the crowning achievement, where biblical figures are vividly depicted in a gilded, gem-encrusted mosaic.
