Saint Mary of the Angels
This hulking Mannerist-style church is intimately connected with St Francis of Assisi. After his death, the basilica sprang up to accommodate pilgrims who came – and still come – to visit the original Porziuncola, a modest stone chapel where the Franciscan order was founded in 1209. Pop inside to see frescoes of the ‘Pardon of Assisi’ above the tiny chapel’s entrance.
