Superb location for train travel and for bus to Aso volcano. Spacious room. Good views from 5th floor. No breakfast available, but eating option across the square. Public onsen behind the hotel.

The lobby floor has an eye-catching atrium and a small observation deck. My room felt airy and with decent space. A few days before arrival I received an email with detailed instructions on how to get to the hotel lobby from the JR station. Staff were polite and helpful.

Situated along Tanohara River and surrounded by tranquil nature in Kurokawa Onsen hot spring area, Oku no Yu Ryokan offers charming Japanese-style accommodation and various hot spring baths. Clean, lovely hospitality, awesome place. Amazing dinner and breakfast; the best I’ve ever had.

Located in the heart of the city, Hotel Nikko Kumamoto features accommodations with free wired internet access and views of Kumamoto Castle. Staffs are very nice. They went above and beyond to make our stay memorable.

Located in Kikuchi and only 18 km from Hirayama Hot Spring, 民泊サライ七城 provides accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Everything about the place is wonderful, especially the owner who is a truly lovely kind-hearted soul; you can tell that she has filled the place with love and care. I would love to return some day, two nights was not nearly long enough...

43 km from Mount Aso, hostel+cafe たね is a recently renovated property situated in Hōgano and features air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and private parking. Super humble awesome hosts that paid attention to details during our stay. What an amazing experience it was to stay here and meet some genuinely honest happy people.

Highly recommended if you’re visiting Mount Aso and looking for a ryokan-style stay, this place offers a warm welcome and great hospitality from the owner. There are also two cats, and you can take a walk to enjoy the surrounding nature.
