Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

We booked a room with its own outside onsen tub, which was excellent. As we had our own private onsen, we did not use the common bathing facilities. As there are no restaurants anywhere near the hotel, we ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel each day. They prepared different meals for us each time, and the meal presentation and taste were outstanding. The staff were also excellent, and attended to our every request. Several staff members were able to speak English as we can't speak any Japanese. The location is a bit out of town along a winding forest road. It would be impossible to get to the hotel without a car and google maps. With the meals our stay was somewhat expensive but we would definitely stay again when we are in the area.

This lodge provides free private parking, room service and free WiFi. We stayed for 2 nights at Hokkoma cottage and loved our stay. The property itself was wonderful, had everything we needed and felt like home. Our trip was focused on taking advantage of Aso's beautiful nature and the cottage's location allowed us to do this. It was also great to know that there was a large bath to use after the hike to soak our tired legs!

Really amazing house and location. We didn't walk to the nearby onsen town, but it is walkable (a bit of a hill), and there are many walking trails around the house. This house has a fence for dogs but we didn't travel with pets and found it made a great yard for our kids to play. The onsen bath in the house is great and there is plenty of space.
