This is a tiny market town (almost a village!) in Cumbria.

This is a tiny market town (almost a village!) in Cumbria. However, it has access to all of the lakes, boat trips, walking everything you need for a trip. There are a million climbing/walking shops in the town centre so if you forget anything it's all there. As for food plenty restaurants and cafes some very pricey others not. There is a Weatherspoons there which was packed morning noon and night for food if you don't want to pay for pricey places. There is a nice selection of bars too most do food and some are really foody places rather than bars. Dogs everywhere so if you are allergic - avoid! There is a wonderful supermarket there - Booths - which has everything you need if you are catering this yourself. Enjoy! If you aren't into climbing/walking then two nights is more than enough for just a relaxing weekend away.

This is the place to unwind, take in the amazing 360 scenery. Theres loads to do, walks, hike, rent bikes, kayaks, paddle boarding or just sit and watch the world go by. I ate at the restaurant Id booked The Glaramara hotel, they prepare exceptional food, my time was taken with hikes up Herons Pike, Scafell Pike and a good long walk around the Derwent lake. It’s a place that asks for your full attention and rewards it with a deep sense of peace. For me, Borrowdale isn't about what you do, but about what you feel—a sense of solitude and connection to something wild and enduring. I left feeling quite emotional and cant wait to return.

Applethwaite is a hamlet pressed against a hill at an elevation of some 60m above Keswick and Derwent Water. It is only a 30-40 minute stroll to the many cosy pubs in Keswick for a drink or a hearty meal. Keswick is a nice place with many outdoor and mountaineering shops — a clear mark of what the visitor can expect from the surrounding countryside. From Keswick one can take double-decker coaches running to many places and lakes further afield. We fell in love with the Borrowdale valley S of Derwent Water, Grassmere, Buttermere, Langdale, Ullswater…

Visited in early October...town was humming in daytime, and reasonably busy at night. Didn't feel like holidaying out of season. Lots of outdoor shops, cafe's, pubs and cafes, all seemed very friendly. Ate in both pubs and local restaurant. Very helpful tourist Information with lots of maps etc

Ideal for fell walking at all levels.

Ideal for fell walking at all levels. Some great hikes in the area such as Glaramara and Dale Head. Buy the Cicerone guide to find out more. One piece of advice is to do your research thoroughly before setting out. Take a map and compass, or have your route all planned on a GPS app. Some of the paths suddenly fork and if you take the wrong one, you can waste a lot of time and effort getting back on track. They generally don't have helpful fingerposts in the Lake District.

Portinscale is ideally situated on the shores of Derwent...

Portinscale is ideally situated on the shores of Derwent Water with fantasic views of the lake and the fells. It is perfectly situated for a short walk into Keswick with all its facilities and public transport for access to the rest of the Lake District, or you can take the launch across the lake or catch the bus. From Portinscale there is easy access to walk around the lake and there are 2 Marinas for boating, canoeing and paddle boarding. The café is and lovely and covers a full range of meals at reasonable prices. It also sells a few essential catering essentials. There is a pub and hotel in the village which both serve food. The staff are all very friendly but as at April 24 both establishments require investment in facilities and food quality. The village of Braithwaite is also close , it has a small shop for provisions with 2 great pubs/hotels that are very popular for food.

Easy to get to shops in Keswick. Good food at the Lakes Distillery and Chesters near Ambleside. Good low level walks around Grasmere. A visit to the gingerbread shop in Grasmere is a must but watch for the traffic wardens if parking outside
