FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

- From US$239.48 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.8Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 88 reviewsA great room plus luxurious bathroom including a huge walk-in shower plus separate bath, the layout of this converted barn was well thought out, and the facilities were top-notch. Very friendly staff and owners. The car battery failed, and the owners kindly came to pick us up from where we were stranded. Just around the corner of Wasdale, with one of the best hiking options and dramatic scenery to be found in Lake District/England. Would recommend.Guest review byBronneNetherlands

Keswick is a beautiful town with lots of lovely cafes, bars and restaurants and shops. The lake Derwentwater is beautiful and the surrounding countryside is so pretty. There’s so much to do in Ambleside, and I think I’ll definitely come again in another season. You can enjoy poetic walks, explore local heritage sites, or even catch a movie or a play. For the sporty ones, there’s hiking, biking, water sports, and even rock climbing. During my stay, there were a few rainy days and even Storm Amy, but none of that changed the beauty of the Lake District. I’ll surely be back — again and again.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Traditional hotel, but clean and well decorated We were there lass that 24 hrs but found the staff to be pleasant and the food good It was a perfect stop over on the way to Scotland - but could have stayyed longerGuest review byKateUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom
