This hotel was very convenient to all the tourist sites and restaurants. In four or five minutes we were at the main square, admiring all the fabulous buildings. We liked the friendly and helpful staff at the front desk. The breakfast was wonderful, not only for the huge variety on the buffet but also for the setting with vaulted stone ceilings and a terrace with a view onto the valleys and hills of the countryside.

FAQs about hotels in Sicily

An Island of Intrigue

The largest Italian island, Sicily has long been a place of mystery and intrigue, coveted by civilisations. Its Greek history is most evident at Agrigento whose UNESCO World Heritage-listed Valley of the Temples has amazingly well-preserved Greek temples.

Also important to Greece was Siracusa. Archimedes was born here and there is a theatre and necropolis to explore. However, the most spectacularly located Greek theatre is at Taormina. Set on a hill overlooking the glorious Mediterranean Sea, this theatre points towards Mount Etna smoking away in the distance above Catania. Picturesque Taormina is one of the most popular Sicily resorts and down below there are some wonderful Giardini Naxos hotels on the beach, available on Booking.com.

Another resort boasting some of the best Sicily hotels for families is fabulous Cefalù. Home to a lovely beach, this small town is dramatically located at the foot of a mountain. To the north-west are the Aeolian Islands (also known as the Lipari Islands), volcanic islands with plunging cliffs and secret coves.

Back on the main island, the capital Palermo is a seductive mix of amazing architecture and laidback life. Trapani to the west is known for its salt flats, whereas Messina to the east is where trains drive straight onto the ferry to Reggio Calabria on the Italian mainland.

So much history and things to see and do in Palermo.

So much history and things to see and do in Palermo. The city is very walkable and we loved the fountain of shame, the Quattro Canti and Amazing Chiesa del Gesù. All in easy walking distance We didn’t get to see it all. The shopping, and markets had lots of variety and restaurants were many The port area was a nice variation for change of scenery. Really enjoyed our stay in Palermo

Unfortunately, my experience in Catania was quite disappointing. The city felt dirty and poorly maintained, with a lot of trash around the streets. It was hard to find good food, and many of the restaurants we tried were overpriced for the quality they offered. The city was also extremely noisy, both during the day and at night, making it difficult to relax or enjoy a peaceful walk. On top of that, the air felt quite polluted, and overall, I didn’t find Catania as charming or welcoming as I had hoped. Sadly, it didn’t live up to the beautiful image I had before visiting.

My rating is for the island of ortigia in Siracusa. I visited one night and one afternoon, stayed at a hotel 10 min drive from Ortigia that had free parking since we had a car which was good because we did a day trip to Noto and Modica. Oritigia was absolutely beautiful, surrounded by water, beautiful buildings and architecture, great shops and restaurants and they had nice fountains, old ruins and the castle. A MUST SEE when you are in Sicily.

Trapani was a bit of a disappointment.

Trapani was a bit of a disappointment. Especially if you're trying to compare it to Noto, Ragusa, and Modica, for example. That comparison isn't really possible/shouldn't be made. If you're coming from Agrigento, continue on to Castellammare del Golfo. And on the way there, be sure to visit Erice. It's truly beautiful little place on a mountain. And the views are stunning, too.

As parking is difficult in these narrow streeted Roman villages, it's better to find a pay as you go carpark and walk easily around the town, discovering everything to offer, which is a lot in Noto, Beautiful churches, Baroque style buildings, piazzas with nice cafes and quaint parks to sit and ponder, what to do next.
