Located near the JR station, it provides free shuttle services to and from the station, making transportation seamless. It’s a great option for families, even if not everyone wants to ski, as there are plenty of other activities and shopping opportunities nearby. The cottage-style accommodations are cozy and nestled close to nature, offering beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere. A perfect destination for both winter sports enthusiasts and those looking for a peaceful getaway!Guest review byYok CheongSingapore
- From US$568.89 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 39 reviewsThe staff spoke good english and were extemely helpful. The food included in the half board price served in private dining areas was amazingly well presented traditional Japanese food. That looked and tasted out of this world. Some of the best food we had on our trip to Japan and we stayed in several expensive Ryokan. Lovely private or public outdoor onsen or in a subterranean cave. The Noto peninsular is still recovering from the earthquake of Jan 2024 and the terrible flooding in Sept 2024 but a trip there is well worthwhile to see the scenery and see how well the repairs are progressingGuest review byChristopherUnited Kingdom
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.5Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 98 reviewsThis is such a special ryokan, right on the river and overall it was a wonderful experience. There are multiple onsens to choose from. The ryokan food took us out of our comfort zone, and we tried Japanese dishes we never would have otherwise. The staff were all very helpful which added to making our stay pleasant. Make sure you arrive right on the check in time to make the most out of your stay or even better - opt to stay two nights! :-)Guest review byKarlienSouth Africa
- From US$144.86 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 105 reviewsIt’s clean, very well equipped with heater, cooking utensils. The owners are so nice and friendly. Language may be a barrier but they tried really hard to accommodate all our needs. The place is slightly secluded which is perfect for quiet vacation but you can still go to town centre by just taking 1 train to Karuizawa station and the owners are nice enough to drop and pick you!Guest review byShereenMalaysia

Enjoyed our side trip to inuyama castle - easy to get to by local train. Also a good trip to Atsuta Jingu Shrine. If you take a train on the Meitetsu Nagoya main line and get off at Jingumae station, an entrance to the shrine is just across the road from the station. (Main road, but there are pedestrian crossings). Didn't leave much time to explore Nagoya itself. Did get to Osu mall, which was quite interesting, but a little over-hyped we thought. Area round station itself was good compared with many cities - much more salubrious and more like being in a reasonably upmarket commercial/shopping area. Could certainly have happily spent another full day in Nagoya if our schedule had allowed.Guest review byGaryNew Zealand - 10
Kanazawa was a really good destination.
Kanazawa was a really good destination. There was a lot less hustle and bustle than what we encountered in Tokyo and Kyoto, but had quite a few tourist sites to see. It was worth the effort to go there.Guest review bymarkAustralia - 8.0
It is a lovely location.
It is a lovely location. It has a looped walk that shows multiple shrines and the old castle, watch out for the bears. There is an old street with wooden houses, it is a bit of a tourist trap and the shops are over priced but it is worth seeing. The museum is interesting and we met a lovely old man that guided us around. The street market was interesting.Guest review byPatrick MulliganIreland - 8.0

2 nights was too long, 1 night would have been plenty. Its easy to get around but the main bus/ train station is crazy busy. Its quite hectic and crowded, allow extra time to make up for the queues.Guest review byMichelleAustralia - 8.0

We really liked Matsumoto and it was a much more fun and interesting city than we expected. We had an overnight stay, largely to visit the famous castle, after visiting Kiso valley. Would happily have stayed longer.Guest review byrebeccaCanada - 10

Shizuoka is a hidden gem.
Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.Guest review byMarkAustralia - 8.0

Niigata is a refreshing small city, and the river has beautiful views of both sides. Each side of the river has green pedestrian and bicycle rider paths. There is easy access to the Performing Arts Center with its living rooftop garden on it's oval shaped building. Hakusan Park is not to be missed - an oasis away from the hubbub of office and city life! Complete with a lotus pond, bridges, a large temple, Tori gates, and a pond with a wisteria-covered bridge. Very scenic. There are the shops on Furumachidori - a covered avenue with adorable shops, bronze figures of baseball players, and the Japan Animation and Manga College is on this avenue. Along this dori you might see a box of turtles sunning on the sidewalk!Guest review byJeannieUnited States - 8.0
What we liked most was the Yayoi Kusama Museum.
What we liked most was the Yayoi Kusama Museum. However it was closed on Monday, the only day we had during our stay. So we had to change our onward ticket to extend to Tue afternoon so that we can visit the museum on Tue.Guest review byNancyCanada - 10
I recommend staying.
I recommend staying. I wrote a long review separately which I hope is useful; please refer to that. In addition, for young children, you can visit the sheep shed where they keep the sheep to see sheep up close, wander down and the up the hill behind reception, and get the best tasting soft serve ever from the restaurant!Guest review byDavinosJapan
