Kanazawa is a great city, very relaxing and walkable. People are very friendly and the restaurants are great. It was a great place to visit for a few days after Tokyo. We do try the famous Noto Beef at a great low key restaurant. It was a great experience and the meat was incredible. Great hosts! Great visits possible in this area - the Ropeway (cable car) up into the alps, the Onsen, Hida Village was superb and had loads of additional activities for children, and Takayama was a complete surprise with is bijou shops in the beautiful old quarter. Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. I forgot about the library but overall not many sights near the train stations for a tourist. I came from the Ogizawa side of the Tateyama Kurobe route and thought that I could have taken the shinkansen to Nagano or train to Kanazawa to spend the day/night there instead. However, Toyama seems like an ideal overnight stop from the Tateyama side. Despite being a fish port, I thought that the popular kaiten sushi shops by the train stations are a little overrated, though still good.
