- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 259 reviewsThis was an amazing onsen house. Located very close to the JR terminal station (3 min walk). The open air onsen is superb and we have enjoyed every single minute inside. The room is super spacious - I would even say the biggest we have ever had during our stay in Japan - you get free mochi, hot water, green tee ingredients every day. They even replaced the linens and towels after 1 night. The staff is very nice and helpful. They called a gas station for me, which charged us more than they should. There is an attached parking lot for free. The whole accommodation is a traditional onsen house with tatami floor. The stay was very nice and enjoyable. And not only due to the superb onsen inside. I highly recommend this!Guest review byTomasCzech Republic
- From US$123.13 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.4Good - What previous guests thought, 171 reviewsThe room was much bigger than I anticipated, and in a Japanese style (with tatami) so I was pleasantly surprised. The onsen in the hotel was an absolute delight. It had several baths with different temperatures, a lounge space, a sauna, a cold bath (which can be rare), and of course everything needed to wash yourself thoroughly before going into the baths. The hotel also provides body towels as well as face towels, so you don't need to bring yours. They have lockers to keep your items safe while bathing. There's free breakfast (little pieces of bread + some juice and coffee/tea) and a space on the first floor to relax after the onsen for example. It has wifi there as well.Guest review byAntheaJapan
- From US$144.86 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 517 reviewsOur stay was incredible. We absolutely loved all of it. I would recommend staying at least two nights and make sure to include breakfast and dinner as part of the experience. The food was exceptional but more importantly our hosts explained every dish and were more than accommodating for our requirements. They offer a range of wine and saki which we purchased aswell. Unsure of the onsen process we were shown where to bath and enjoyed a half hour private onsen in the evening. We had one of the best sleeps ever! Hands down such a great ryokan made even better by the wonderful hosts who are happy to help. We will be back for sure.Guest review byMcRaeTurkey
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,375 reviewsThe room with a private onsen was great. Although be warned you might have to cool down the onsen for a while before you feel you can step in. Kids absolutely loved it too. Staff was great. My daughter is coeliac and one evening we decided to have dinner there. We told them and they catered for us no problem. From previous experience in other places we were slightly worried but in the end it was fine. They prepared her a kids meal that was gluten-free.Guest review byNicolasSpain
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 45 reviewsThe lounge is absolutely the highlight, here the Grand Phenix shares three things with you: great local draft beer, a gentle Okushiga snowing view, and a warm firepit. This lounge is so special that you can wait for your dinner table (because of the tight reservation in Christmas season) there while drinking your drinks by a bonfire, this even makes waiting a wonderful experience...Guest review byTeddypicnicChina

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.Guest review byTimUnited States - 10

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.Guest review byHelen SUnited Kingdom - 10

Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.Guest review byFionaSouth Africa
