- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 65 reviewsWe stayed here as a base for Koyasan, as we couldn’t get accommodation for five up on the mountain. We had a hire car. The road from Koyasan down here is extremely narrow and windy - it will take you half an hour, and you will want to be a confident driver on narrow mountain roads. We lived in fear that we would meet an oncoming vehicle in one of the insanely narrow stretches, but never did, thankfully. They have a restaurant on site which we recommend you use - there is nowhere else to eat within a large distance, and almost all the restaurants in Koyasan are closed in the evening. We had breakfast there which was fantastic - though a little too traditionally Japanese for our fussy teenage son’s taste. The accommodation is in a lovely quiet valley - it’s a beautiful spot. Our cabin was spacious and had good cooking facilities (though we didn’t use them). The receptionist spoke enough English to get us booked in without recourse to Google Translate. There was no wifi in our cabin - but amazingly enough there was phone reception, despite being in a deep valley in the middle of nowhere. There may be Wifi in reception but we didn’t explore this. We used the private onsen in our cabin - basically a very large stone bath that you fill from hot and cold taps to whatever temperature you want. Very pleasant. The hotel seems to offer a shuttle service to Koyasan - we didn’t use it but overheard other guests who had used it.Guest review byPaulAustralia
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,729 reviewsThe temple and grounds are stunningly beautiful. The room was the nicest I've had on this trip - comfortable and beautiful. The temple is cold but the heaters in the bedrooms made it very comfortable. The meals were delicious - again some of my best on my entire trip. They were very generous in sharing information about their religion and culture, and inviting tourists to participate in activities that helped us to better understand the life and routine at Ekoin. I appreciated the booklet in the room that explained how to navigate different things (e.g. the meditation, the morning service) so that I better understood. It was a special experience and was grateful for the opportunity to visit here.Guest review bySarahCanada
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 170 reviewsThe hotel is a great base to explore Kumano Kodo. Location is excellent - at the heart of Kumano Kodo, near Hongu, right on the main bus line, great for hikes. The hotel has very nice Japanese style family rooms, with great views of nature. Dinner (kaiseki - tasting style) was fantastic and very good value for money. Breakfast also rich (you can choose Japanese and western). Bonus - the hotel also has own "onsen" - Japanese hot bath, including two private family rooms and two big open air bath. Using the onsen is included in the room price. Moreover, staff is very helpful, speak solid English and will take you to with a shuttle to a better bust stop for the ride to the Kumano Kodo trek.Guest review byPetrCzech Republic
- From US$192.61 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.2Very good - What previous guests thought, 777 reviewsThe room had a great ocean view, you could watch the sun setting by the beach. The room was very spacious for our family of 5. Separate bathroom and toilet was very convenient. The hot spring was awesome, very big with 2 levels. Free ice cream after a hot bath was very enjoyable. The buffet breakfast and dinner was very good, food was great & had lots of variety to choose from.Guest review byCelia Mei seeHong Kong
- From US$344.90 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,838 reviewsThe hotel is massive. I don't think I have ever been to anything quite like this before. You have konbini, restaurants, arcades, and much more on site. To call it a hotel is an understatement; it's a complex. There are multiple baths, some indoors, some in caves, and there's even a stamp rally to collect a stamp for each onsen bath. You get free bath salts as a reward.Guest review byKseniaIreland
- From US$88.88 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 6.8Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 123 reviewsFew minutes walk from the train station. And there are many buses from the train station to the attractions. Staff are excellent and always doing their best to serve. Room rate is reasonable and the public bath is a bonus. Mini mart, small restaurant and the laundromat are all in the same building.Guest review byMelvin Zachary Liang LoonSingapore

The room is well decorated, although a bit aged, with nice view, and the onsen was a plus. The food was great as well! It was a great experience, wish we could come back again.Guest review byShuyanCanada

The scenic mountains near the city offers stunning sunset views. The Sakura were in full bloom. There are several parks around the city, and the impressive Wakayama castle. The hotel (Candeo Hotels Nankai) is great value - fantastic river views, rooftop onsen that you can enjoy the sunset. And right at the Wakayama Station. Good dining options around the hotel too.Guest review byKwokSingapore - 10.0

We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.Guest review byAndrew - 10.0

There was a quaint cafe/sweet shop within walking distance that we fell in love with. They served amazing coffee in hand made cups and had the most delightful assortment of sweets and lollies - even Halloween sweetsGuest review byEleiseAustralia - 10.0

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.Guest review byBarbaraUnited States - 10.0
part of the kumano kodo must do destination !
part of the kumano kodo must do destination ! it is a wonderful location with the shrine, a zen building of the heritage center and the torii gate, which also act as a bus stop too. The bus system is inadequate for so many visitors. I understand it is in a rural part of the Japanese town, but i am sure the bus company can regulate and insert a couple more bus departures during peak time. Surely they would have collected a historical data of peak passengers timing by now since this kumano kodo has been around for so long. So that it can provide a better service for the hikersGuest review byleekoonSingapore - 10.0

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.Guest review byAnonymousAustralia - 8.0

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10.0

This is a very peaceful little town on the southeast coast of Kii Peninsula. The residents and store clerks are mostly senior citizens but they are polite and pleasant to meet. It’s the gateway to the Nashi area and the famous Kumano Kodo historical trail. You can also rent a bike at the Information Center next to the JR Kii Katsuura Station to quickly circle around town.Guest review byKuangYuTaiwan - 10.0

Our favorite point of this hotel is the food and the wooden house. The independent wooden house is perfect and cozy, suiting for family trip. With forest surrounding, you can enjoy the good quality of air and there's a river near by that you can enjoy the fun of water. The hot spring opening time is a bit tricky because it closed after 9:00 am and reopen at 14:00. If you only stay for one day you will need to seize your time to enjoy their hot spring. The restaurant use the fresh ingredients to make awesome food. Took a really really good rest here :DGuest review byChelingTaiwan
