- From US$145.88 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 202 reviewsUpon hearing about the prospect of staying at Lochmara Lodge upon arrival at Picton from North Island, we jumped at the opportunity. Definitely no regrets, as although the lodge is not high end, everything else makes up for it. This was one of our top highlight stays across 5 weeks in New Zealand! We felt so welcomed by staff, before and during our stay! Prior to booking, all questions, including transport via water taxi, were quickly and diligently answered. Upon arrival at the water taxi, we were warmly greeted and helped by staff to ensure a swift check-in ahead of schedule, and the same was experienced upon arrival. The place is set deep in the Marlborough Sounds, and it offered the most amazing scenery and nature all around. It was breathtaking, especially as the sun set and first thing in the morning. The fact that it cannot be reached by car made it extra special and unique. We had two rooms, one water facing and one facing the back-end (this room was perhaps a bit sad). The room was small, quite simple but we did not spend much time inside, as there was so much else to do! We loved the chill and vibe of the place, and the level of activities available to us during our stay. We did hiking, the feeding time activities with the pigs, goats, birds etc on site (we loved the insight provided with all), kayaking, paddle boarding, the games and general relaxation. We also visited the underwater observatory - which was super interesting - and great interaction and insight into the creatures of the New Zealand waters. The restaurant offered an all-day service, including breakfast and dinner for us overnight house guests. The staff was always friendly and welcoming, and the food and drinks were of a high quality. I think we could have easily done a third night at this place, and it provided such a great introduction to what more to come during our time on the South Island.Guest review byI JSingapore
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 22 reviewsThe resort Bay of Many Coves lies hidden away in a bay by the same name in the Queen Charlotte Sound part of the spectacular Marlborough Sounds. It is a jewel, truly a luxury resort very well worth the price. Amazing attention to detail showed up in all areas, from the comfort of the apartment to the nightly turn-down service to the availability of little snacks all day long and much more. The staff was friendly and sociable and very capable of sensing when some assistance would be helpful. I especially appreciated the gentle attention I received during mealtimes - which is important to a solo traveler. Which brings me to the meals! Breakfast was delicious and offered many choices while the evening meals were just superb. I had signed up for the 5 course package and was impressed with every dish: flavor, variety, presentation, use of local products when possible ... Michelin worthy! Bay of Many Coves also has some wonderful trails to explore. The view from their Lookout Point is well worth the steep climb (the resort provides hiking poles: take them along). I also checked out a kayak one day and enjoyed exploring the bay and checking out the Pied Shags (karuhiruhi - cormorants) in their nests, feeding their almost grown chicks. I had an unforgettable 3 days stay!Guest review bySummerUnited States
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 116 reviewsThis is the hotel where you feel like at home from the first step. Elisabeth welcomed us with a glass of wine and some cheese. The room reminds the bedroom in the palace. Everything is in a very good taste and quality. Lovely small hotel. Biggest asset of this place is staff. Elisabeth takes care of you from entry till departure. She also prepared excellent breakfast for us. Thanks 🙏Guest review byWojciechPoland
- From US$91.84 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,953 reviewsThe location was perfect, and such a pretty garden at the entrance! We explored Picton by foot, and did a bit of shopping as well. We were able to get into our room a little early as a bonus due to when our flight arrived. The information from reception about preparations for the Queen Charlotte Walk were appreciated, as we didn't know quite what to expect.Guest review byVikkiChile
- From US$36.16 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,257 reviewsOur unit was very spacious with a good layout and very clean. The staff was so friendly and helpful. Location was perfect, just a short stroll along the marina to reach the town centre. Parking in front of the unit was very convenient. 2 nights were not enough to make use of all the amenities in the holiday park (e.g. pizza oven, games room, swimming pool).Guest review byMelanieGermany

Picton is a beautiful place on a sunny day or the warmer months. There's plenty to do if you like the outdoors. It's very kid friendly with a great wee water park and playground. It's easily walkable with some great restaurants and Cafe's. If your a pizza fan then Scoozi is a must.Guest review byCarlNew Zealand - 8.0

We did the Queen Charlotte s walk and staying in the lodge was such a treat for us. They offer pack lunch to rake away for the people doing the track which is really helpfull and there is an outdoor spa available.Guest review byGaelleNew Zealand - 10.0

Lochmara Bay has so much to see and do and has beautiful scenery. Peaceful and quiet if you don't mind the odd speedboat or jetski. Lochmara Lodge is a fantastic option for people stopping in from tramping on the Queen Charlotte Track or visiting by boat (20 mins from Picton) - the accommodation was excellent as was the food and activities on offer. They even take your bags boat to door and back! Activities include roaming the stunning gardens with unusual forest artwork, enjoying the wildlife in the forest and marine life from the viewing boat, feeding the animals, kayaking, swimming when warm enough, lying in the hammocks!!! Big shout out to the staff who work hard and are helpful and friendly.Guest review byAnonymousNew Zealand - 8.0

The Portage was a lovely place to stay, the views were amazing and the staff extremely helpful. We were dissapointed about only 1 restaurant being open, and therefore not a large selection to choose from. We would recommend asking in advance, if they can make up a sharing platter, as this is not on the menu, and when we asked, they mentioned we should have ordered in advance. The beautiful view from the deck totally lends itself to drinking and grazing on a delicious platter. The kids loved the kayaks and paddle boards. We would recommend booking a transfer and taking a picnic to a secluded beach - we had a wonderful time.Guest review byTravellers05New Zealand - 10.0

I loved the remoteness of where we stayed, yet the sense of being safe and looked after by the locals. The views and natural environment are sublime. The only permitted way to get here is currently by boat as the road has been damaged by a storm and is only allowed to be used by residents' and service vehicles. This makes it very safe to walk up the road to tracks into the wonderlands the area has to offer. The walks vary from fairly easy to somewhat taxing. Some of the tracks have a challenging gradient if you are not used to walking, and would be more difficult if they are wet. Having said that, we are 'senior citizens' with average fitness and we managed to summit the Onahau lookout (416 meters / 1368 feet) above sea level) and return in one piece.Guest review byTomNew Zealand - 10.0
What a fabulous hideaway Ngahere Hou is!!
What a fabulous hideaway Ngahere Hou is!! If you're after a rustic glamping experience, then this is perfect. We loved the garden setting, the views into Kenepuru Sound, the outdoor shower area (sadly didn't get to try the shower as we availed ourselves the wood-fired hot tub - sooo good!), and the separate kitchen / dining hut. After a long day of hiking, we were really happy to sit in the sunny kitchen hut and just relax with a cup of tea. Super happy we had the whole area to ourselves (to be honest, I wouldn't want to share this area with other guests who may be staying in the yurt). Would definitely have liked to stay an extra night and enjoy this beautiful spot for a while longer. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic, with gluten-free bread (!!!), croissants (not gf but the husband says they were very good), bacon, eggs, orange juice, and a ton of cereal options in the cupboard! The only (slight) negative for me would be that I found the bed a bit too soft but the husband thought it was great and found it very comfy. If you're hiking to Ngahere Hou from the Queen Charlotte Track: it's in a perfect position distance-wise between Punga Cove and Mistletoe Bay (what we did). It's about a half hour off the track, down the slope into Kenepuru Sound. The climb up the next morning was a killer, you do need to be reasonably fit but after that, the rest of the day/trek will feel almost easy!Guest review byR&K - 10.0

We were there for the annual Marina 2 Marina race which is a fun event to take part in. Picton is a nice place to visit so not just the town where you get the ferry to Wellington - it's way more than that! Good range of shops and restaurants to look at, great playground on the foreshore for the kids and a nice place to have lunch and enjoy the stunning view of the harbour. Plenty of boat cruise options that take you around the sounds and some good walks to do around the area.Guest review bySimonNew Zealand - 10.0

No one told us that we should have caught the Ferry to Punga Cove from Picton. We drove for hours only to find out that the road was closed for maintenance. Very annoying and we had to wait for hours to drive through a very short window of time to get through. Apparently Booking.com was told by the property, but the Booking.com did not tell us. Disappointing!Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Stunning location and very cool property that is perfect for families. Be careful with exploring- we had an accident. Loved the paddle-boarding and glow-worms. Very patchy internet connections. Views from the rooms wonderful. Cafe has good food and coffee although pricey. I would bring more food to self-cater another time. Appreciated access to a laundry.Guest review byClaireNew Zealand - 10.0

The peaceful environment and the time to relax in beautiful surroundings. Lovely environment to just chill out and away from stress. Take a tour with Phil through the sounds on his boat. Sports massage with Julie is awesome too.Guest review byKarenNew Zealand
