FAQs about hotels in Madeira Islands
The Island of Eternal Spring
With lush landscapes, brightly coloured flowers and a mild, year-round climate, it’s easy to see why Madeira is called the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. Its interior is mountainous, so most resorts are coastal, many at the foot of steep cliffs.
One such resort is Paul do Mar, a fishing village known for whale watching and surfing, as is Jardim do Mar, on a plateau just east. Nearby Calheta has 2 white sand beaches protected by breakwaters.
The main resort is the capital Funchal. Cascading down slopes, it has the lion’s share of 5-star hotels in Madeira on Booking.com. A cable car ascending into the hills offers fantastic views towards the harbour where cruise liners and ferries from neighbouring Porto Santo island are berthed.
East, Caniço’s sandy beach is nestled between rocky cliffs, while Santa Cruz is the nearest resort to Madeira Airport. Machico is the 2nd biggest city and has the best nightlife outside Funchal, but the best Madeira hotels for families are in quieter resorts such as Porto da Cruz in the north.
Santana is home to the triangular-shaped, thatched houses typical of the island, and twisting mountain roads lead to São Vicente, an attractive hill town with red-roofed houses. By the north-western tip is the village of Porto Moniz whose offshore rocks shelter natural rock pools.

- From US$232.76 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,192 reviewsDelicious breakfast, exceptional dinner and an infinite pool. For breakfast, you could choose from 5-6 warm meals (eggs, French toast, asparagus..) and a cold buffet (from cereals, croissants and local cheese to pastel de nata). The portions from the menu were smaller but in combination with the cold buffet, the breakfast was just awesome! We stayed in the with the "garden view ", however we could still see and hear the sea. The view was stunning.Guest review byLenkaCzech Republic
- From US$247.52 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 994 reviewsThe buffet and drinks options were excellent. The snack bar was convenient, too. The resort was adorned in natural beauty with beautiful palm trees. Our two bedroom suit was huge. The hotel to the beach had a seamless connection with a beach bar. The water is stunning. We had dinner at the Portuguese and Italian restaurants, very good. Great value for the price.Guest review byDanielle MirraCanada

We visited at end of September until 9th October the weather was about 22-25 degrees. It was quite busy with tourists and a lot of traffic. We stayed in the Lido area and it was our first visit to the island it was about 1&1/2 mile walk into Funchal but easy walking on a wide footpath. There is a promenade that goes from the lido area all the way to camara do lobos and is a fabulous flat walk. You don’t need to hire a car for first visit - there are many different regular buses with loads of stops.Guest review byCynthiaUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Machico resort is not for the night clubbing holiday maker,...
Machico resort is not for the night clubbing holiday maker, It was however for us a slow paced setting with a good selection of restaurants and supermarkets with walking routes for those who wish. The harbour offered boat trips, whale watching and surf lessons, the latter was enjoyed from the safety of a dry vantage point. Local bus into Funchal for 2-60 euro single was 50 mins away which opens up further opportunities for excursions and sight seeing like the red or yellow hop on hop off bus tours which operate from the promenade where the ticket is valid for 24 hours allowing to to spend time where the mood takes. Weather forecasting in resort will not take into account the drizzle from the mountains with can add a cooling break from the sunshine and occasional rain. Enjoy.Guest review bySteveUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We were only staying in Caniço, we went there to visit Madeira and really enjoyed it. It's green and beautiful, people are very nice and food is excellent. I would definitely recommend renting a car with a powerful engine as the island has lots of steep roads.Guest review byCristinaUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast.
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast. Not far away from airport and capital, but still on the north. Two hiking starting points are nearby: Queimadas and Achada do Teixeira. Santana also has an only large supermarket on the whole north coast, so you can buy delicious food right there. No such option in Porto Moniz or Seixal.Guest review bySergeyNorway - 8.0

Calhetta itself is small and the main part of it centres around the harbour. As you might expect this means that all the major activities are boat-based such as whale and dolphin watching, sailing, fishing, excursions etc. but there are also lots of restaurants and bars overlooking the harbour where you can get a great meal - especially if you like fish - or just relax for the evening and watch the sunset.Guest review byRobGrantUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Great local place.
Great local place. I am very glad I have not spend the time in Funchal. From here I could explore the whole island and had my peace in the evening but with vibrant Sunday as all the locals come to town for their coffee and markets.Guest review byPavolSlovakia - 10.0
