How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location is very convenient and there are not many options on the island.
The room stinks, although the reception kindly gave us another diffuser, but it does not help with the terrible smell. It sounds to me that the previous person had a strong pee scent or someone or pets pee-ed in the room. I thought the whole floor was stinky since I can smell it once I got into Ground floor so I did not ask for another room and it was already quite late when I arrived and there were not many other options on the island that I could move to, but turns out it was not the case as I leave on the next day when all room has their doors opened, those room smell great. Washroom is very dirty, with mold on the wall. Room has scraps on the floor and dust all over the room, not so well maintained but yea this is a holiday home not hotel.

Verified reviewLocation is nice. On Cheung Chau, everything is small scale. You see the local living close by. It is a bit unhandy as the staff is not around at the hotel. However, they are reachable at a shop at a walking distance at the hotel and reply Whatsapp message quickly.

Verified reviewThe water pressure in the shower was excellent... There are plastic slippers.....
The hotel was on an island far from the center of Hong Kong, it takes 40 minutes by ferry to get there... The hotel was an old house on a high slope, it takes effort to find its location, and moving your bags to the room requires double the effort, and there were no hotel staff to help, and the price was expensive compared to the hotel's specifications... The reception was in a different place from the hotel's location... There are no Islamic restaurants... The hotel description mentioned that there was a balcony in the room, and this is incorrect... There was only one small window overlooking a junkyard... The sink was clogged and the water drainage was weak... The hotel is not worth this price and this suffering to get to it

Verified reviewReception is on the main street when you arrive to check-in, the hotel is a short walk up a hill around the corner. This was initially difficult with all our luggage. But in general we loved that the hotel is located in a convenient but quiet area, it's close to the ferry terminal and the main street where all the shops and restaurants are, also a few minutes walk to the beach. The room itself was unexpectedly spacious for the two of us, compared to what we've stayed in Hong Kong. We could easily lay both our opened luggages flat on the floor. Bed was also big but a bit too hard. Bathroom was also spacious, clean and modern. Small kitchen area with sink was also a bonus, just bring your own utensils.

Verified reviewBreakfast with a view over the harbour was a nice surprise and at only 40HKD was cheap, in our opinion. I've had a lot worse for a lot more.
The bed is basically a mattress between two walls so at my height (a modest 186cm / 6'2") it is impossible to stretch out. There's nowhere for your feet to go except diagonally.

Verified reviewI was in room 28. I loved the balcony view. the room was big for one person but would also be good for 2-3. the shower was good pressure. the room was quiet. everything was very clean.
unfortunately the mattress was uncomfortable with the springs digging into me. I spread the 2 duvets over it so I could sleep pn top of them. A firm bed is OK but the springs made this uncomfortable. all it needs is a mattress topper

Verified reviewDecently clean and well located
Better classified as youth hostel - by far the noisiest late night dorm I've ever stayed in (since graduating high school anyway). Great place for throwing late night fraternity benders; avoid if sleep is a priority.

I didn't like the smell in the room, I think it's the carpets.
